Small Firm Connect: Sharing Challenges, Successes, and Strategies for Resiliency in a Difficult Year

Kirstin Ault, WWCDA Los Angeles Chapter and SFI Committee member, and Of Counsel at California Appellate Law Group will facilitate a forum on how solo and small firm practitioners are coping during this difficult year. 2020 brought us the COVID-19 pandemic, a turbulent election, wildfires, floods, hurricanes, and personal and professional challenges that most of us never imagined coping with all at once. Solo and small firm practice may seem isolating at the best of times. Lockdowns, court closures, and the zoomification of our professional and personal lives can exacerbate these feelings. But, rest assured, you are not alone. Join us in a safe space for a frank and honest conversation about the challenges and successes we as solo and small firm lawyers have experienced over the past year. Brainstorm with your fellow small-law practitioners to develop strategies to position ourselves for success in the coming year. In the midst of a holiday season in the year that seems like it will never end, there is never a better time to connect with a group of brilliant, supportive women to commiserate over our hardships, rejoice over our successes, and strategize for the future. Trial and Case Management: Getting the Most Out of What You Already Have

Lisa Braganca, WWCDA member from Chicago Chapter, SFI member, and principle at Braganca Law will guide a discussion on how technology can help small firm members in firm management and trial preparation. Although you already purchased and use Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat, you are likely using a tiny fraction of their features. Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat have powerful features for managing cases and for presenting your case at trial. We will explores some of these features as well as some free and low cost resources that you can use in your cases. Before you pay big bucks for file management or trial presentation software, you should know what you already have. She will be joined by Ben M. Schorr, a Senior Technical Writer at Microsoft and one of the most popular speakers at the annual ABA TechShow. He is the author of several books and articles on technology including “The Lawyer’s Guide to Microsoft Outlook”, “The Lawyer’s Guide to Microsoft Word” and “OneNote in One Hour”. He was a Microsoft MVP for 20 years and involved with management and technology for more than 25.

How Lawyers and Other Legal Industry Professionals Can Harness the Power of Social Media

Join the WWCDA Small Firm Initiative (SFI) and Social Media Committees on October 14, 2021 from 3:00 - 4:15 PM EST for an engaging panel discussion on effectively using social media for personal branding and thought leadership in today’s legal market. Historically, lawyers and other legal industry professionals have relied on one-way communication strategies such as advertisements, articles and blogging to market their legal services. The world has changed rapidly in the last decade. Today’s market requires engagement with constantly evolving social media tools to communicate. To be successful, lawyers and other legal industry professionals must adapt and find new ways to stand out, tell their story and build a marketable personal brand using social media platforms. In this moderated program, speakers will share: fun and engaging examples of attorneys excelling at social media, “the nuts and bolts” of three major social media tools, practice tips, and teachable moments and takeaways from the missteps of others. We also will provide tips on how members can elevate their online presence using the WWCDA’s social media platforms. Panelists : Renee Dubord Brown, Director of IP Litigation at LinkedIn Erin Gerstenzang, Founder of EHG Law Firm Sarah Wallace, SFI Committee and London Chapter Member and Partner at Constantine Law Moderators : BJ Bernstein, SFI Committee Member and Atlanta Chapter Member and Carla Jordan-Detamore, Social Media Committee Member and DC Chapter Member Please join us via zoom: https://zoom.us/j/81640573141

Ashley D. Adams will provide insights into witness preparation and thinking outside the box when developing trial strategy. The presentation will provide information regarding creative methods for telling your client’s or a witness’ story, including using the psychodrama technique for witness preparation. WatercoolerPLUS EVENT: Missouri Chapter: Conversation with Head of Global Policy Management at Meta

Join Us at the Next WWCDA WatercoolerPLUS Missouri Chapter: Conversation with Head of Global Policy Management at Meta April 14, 2023, from 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM (CT) WWCDA’s Missouri Chapter is hosting a WatercoolerPLUS session with the Head of Global Policy Management at Meta and former federal prosecutor, Monika Bickert. Monika has led content policy at Meta for 10 years, overseeing the team that decides what speech is allowed on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. In our conversation, she’ll explain how that process works and what happens when it doesn’t. We’ll also take a deeper look at some of the tough questions her team has to address, including how to treat terror groups that also hold political positions in governments, how to define covid misinformation, how to create space for honest mental health conversations without allowing promotion of self-harm, and how to respond to censorship demands from authoritarian governments. Monika is looking forward to a robust group discussion and answering our many questions. WWCDA member Michelle Nasser will moderate. Monika will present in-person at Dowd Bennett LLP in St. Louis, MO, where a limited number of attendees are invited to join in person with a 12:30 lunch following the presentation. Please contact events@wwcda.org and mnasser@dowdbennett.com to register to attend in-person and with any questions. Use the yellow RSVP button to register for the live Zoom, which is open to all WWCDA members. This session will NOT be recorded and will NOT be available later on-demand. This program is approved for 1.2 hours of CLE (Missouri). We look forward to seeing you at the Watercooler.
