Veena Viswanatha, Partner in the Washington, D.C., office of Buckley LLP, is a white collar defense lawyer. She has for more than a decade represented corporate and individual clients in complex civil litigation and government investigations, including matters involving the FCPA, securities fraud, breaches of fiduciary duty, and all manner of business disputes.
Noteworthy work includes:
- Defended Chairman of religious nonprofit corporation against breach of fiduciary duty claims in four-week trial in D.C. Superior Court in which plaintiffs sought more than $3 billion in damages.
- Defended Japanese gaming manufacturer in litigation brought by Wynn Resorts, Ltd. in Nevada state court over ownership of multi-billion dollar stake in Wynn Resorts. Ownership of the stake was contested, with both sides lodging breach of fiduciary duty allegations and concerns over collateral overseas business dealings. After six years of litigation—during which the parties produced millions of documents, argued more than a dozen appeals and scores of motions, and took nearly 100 depositions—Wynn Resorts agreed to pay $2.6 billion to settle the gaming manufacturer’s claims one month before trial.
- Defended many companies and senior executives in SEC and DOJ investigations resolved on favorable terms, including declination.
- Represented the Navajo Nation in a landmark lawsuit against the U.S. government for breaches of trust. After years of litigation covering breaches spanning six decades, Buckley secured a $554 million settlement on behalf of the tribe. It is the largest settlement obtained against the U.S. in any action by a single Native American tribe.
