Emily M. Savner is an associate in Jenner & Block's Litigation Department and a member of the firm’s Investigations, Compliance and Defense Practice. She has experience in civil and criminal investigations and trials.
Leveraging her experience as a former federal prosecutor, Ms. Savner represents and advises a wide range of companies in connection with governmental and internal investigations. She conducts internal investigations involving employee misconduct, advises clients through self-reporting of regulatory violations and represents a range of entities subject to civil and criminal federal investigation. Ms. Savner also has experience counseling government-interfacing companies on matters involving the False Claims Act. In her compliance practice, she works with companies across a range of industries to develop practical compliance programs to mitigate corporate risk. Ms. Savner also served on a cross-office, multidisciplinary team acting in support of the monitor of a global, tier-one financial institution. Ms. Savner maintains an active pro bono practice that includes helping clients raise constitutional claims in post-conviction proceedings.
Prior to joining Jenner & Block, Ms. Savner served as a trial attorney in the US Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division for six years. There, Ms. Savner litigated both civil and criminal cases of national significance in the areas of housing and lending discrimination and criminal civil rights violations, including hate crimes, police misconduct and human trafficking. While at the Department of Justice, Ms. Savner took a lead role in all aspects of civil and criminal investigations and litigation, including extensive grand jury work, discovery, settlement and plea negotiations and trial. Ms. Savner won several Department of Justice awards for her investigation and trial work and served as an instructor on trial advocacy skills for the Department of Justice.
In 2017, Ms. Savner served as a special assistant US attorney in the District of Columbia, where she prosecuted and managed a high-volume docket of domestic violence cases.
Ms. Savner received her JD in 2013 from Harvard Law School, where she served as intake director for the Tenant Advocacy Project, triaging cases and representing clients in administrative proceedings before local housing authorities and state appeals boards. Ms. Savner also served as a general board member for the Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review and worked as a research assistant in the areas of labor law and employment discrimination class actions. Ms. Savner received her BA in politics and economics in 2008 from New York University, where she graduated with high honors.
