After spending almost 12 years as an enforcement attorney at the FDA’s Office of the Chief Counsel, including three years as a Special Assistant United States Attorney (SAUSA) with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Central District of California handling criminal prosecutions, Sonia joined Cooley as a partner in 2021. During Sonia's government service, she handled prosecutions and criminal investigations involving the full complement of FDA-regulated products, including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, foods, dietary supplements, OTC drugs, animal drugs and biologics. In addition to criminal work, she also negotiated dozens of civil consent decrees, worked on civil money penalty and other administrative actions, and handled False Claims Act and appellate litigation for the agency.
Before joining FDA, Sonia was an associate at Latham & Watkins in the Washington, D.C. office. She also clerked for the late Judge Roger W. Titus of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland from 2006-2007.
Sonia graduated from Princeton University in 1999 with an A.B. in English and earned her J.D. and Master's in Public Health from GW in 2006. Between college and law school, Sonia worked for four years as a management consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers and IBM Business Consulting Services.
Outside of work, Sonia loves playing tennis, running, spending time outdoors, listening to music of all kinds, and baking.
